Could buying your car parts overseas save you money?

Before buying a replacement part, compare its local price with the total cost of buying and shipping it to Jamaica. Include the purchase price, shipping and any other applicable fees.

Parts valued at US$100 or less attract no customs duties or taxes

According to Jamaica Customs, shipments with a Free on Board (FOB) value of US$100 or less attract no import duties or taxes. This can make importing lower-cost car parts more affordable.

Shipping and courier fees still apply. The US$100 limit applies to the shipment’s FOB value, not a separate allowance for each part packed together.

Compare the final cost

Here is a simple example using illustrative figures:

Local price: J$15,000
Overseas purchase: US$50, or J$8,000 at an assumed exchange rate of J$160 to US$1
Shipping and all other fees: J$2,000
Jamaican customs duties and taxes: J$0, assuming the shipment qualifies under the US$100 threshold
Total landed cost: J$10,000
Your saving: J$5,000, or approximately 33%

This example is not a PLG quotation. Actual prices, exchange rates and shipping fees will vary.

What if the shipment costs more than US$100?

If the FOB value exceeds US$100, applicable customs duties and taxes are calculated on the full cost, insurance and freight value—not just the amount above US$100. Get an estimate before ordering so you can confirm whether importing still saves you money.

Check the part, then check the price

Ask your mechanic to confirm the correct part number. Compare the same brand, condition and quantity, and request the seller’s packed weight and dimensions for a shipping estimate.
